Our Sixth Formers will become the leaders of tomorrow. As a small, nurturing school, the opportunities for leadership are abundant and allow our Sixth Form students to grow, enhance and hone their leadership skills.
Mount House prides itself on its House system whereby all staff and students are assigned to one of four houses. The Houses are all named after trees: Oak, Ash, Cedar and Holly. Each House is described as a ‘family within a family,’ providing a great sense of belonging and support throughout Mount House School life.
The House system rewards effort and achievement, both for excellent academic work and involvement in the many inter-house competitions which generate close bonds between students. In Sixth Form the House system becomes a unique opportunity for students to grow and develop leadership skills through responsibility for helping younger students in their House to succeed.
The pinnacle of this leadership opportunity is the student selection of Heads of House who support running the house meetings, assemblies and public speaking on behalf of their House.
Service learning is an integral part of our student sixth form experience. Through being involved in service learning projects our students gain skills such as communication, teamwork, leadership and problem- solving.
Students are encouraged to reach out to local community organisations related to their chosen area of service and aim to establish important links. These include helping out at an old people’s home or day centre, working with children in a primary school setting or helping out at a local food bank. Growing a stronger community within the school is also enhanced by our service learning students. Through helping younger students with homework or taking part in lesson activities, strong bonds are formed. Students also take part in running clubs or assisting staff where an extra pair of hands maybe needed, these include the House of Equality club and Retro Gaming.
Students are encouraged to regularly reflect and discuss their experiences, challenges and achievements through their various projects. As well as evaluating the projects impact on the community, both short-term and long-term effects will be reflected on.
